Overview
Sheshnag Trek is one of the most mesmerizing and outstanding alpine lake treks in Jammu and Kashmir. This trek is considered as one of the most exotic summer treks and ideal for both experienced as well as novice trekkers. The clear and clean water of the lake due to algae production offers reflection of the surrounding views making it surreal for trekkers passing through the trails. This lake is a pathway to the famous pilgrimage site, Amarnath Yatra. Sheshnag lake is not just a lake, it's a place where myths come alive surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, verdant meadows and snow-capped peaks. This pristine lake is steeped in Mythology and Legend. According to the neighborhood folklore, it's far from the homestead of Sheshnag, the god of snakes and is allegedly dug by the lord himself, adding a mystical charm to its beauty.
Sheshnag Lake is especially fed by the streams and snow mountains on top of it and always freezes in winters. Besides its scientific importance, this lake holds significance in Hinduism. There are various mythological stories related to the lake. It's a must visit tourist destination for travelers. The Sheshnag Trek offers a combination of beautiful alpine scenery, challenging terrain and cultural significance in the Kashmir Himalayas.

The Sheshnag Lake Trek is considered a moderate to difficult trekking trail due to its high altitude reaching around 4,300 meters, rugged and rocky terrain with steep ascents and descents, unpredictable weather conditions, and the duration of 3-4 days required to complete the trek. Proper acclimatization, physical fitness, and the guidance of experienced trekking guides are essential for a successful and safe trekking experience.
The ideal time to embark on the Sheshnag Lake Trek is during the summer season, spanning from June to August. This period offers pleasant weather conditions with clear skies and mild temperatures, making the trekking experience more enjoyable. While some snow patches may still be present at higher altitudes, the trails are generally clear and accessible. The monsoon season, from July to September, brings the risk of heavy rainfall and landslides, rendering the trek dangerous and slippery. The autumn months of October and November can be unpredictable, with the possibility of early snowfall hampering the trekking conditions. Spring (March to May) and winter (December to February) are not recommended due to heavy snowfall, avalanche risks, and extreme cold temperatures, which make the trails virtually impassable.
