Overview
Our “Meghalaya and Kaziranga Adventure” tour takes you on an ever-memorable journey throughout Northeast India. The Meghalaya with Kaziranga 8 Days 7 Nights Tour Package starts in Guwahati which serves as the entry to that region before transporting you to Meghalaya which is a fascinating state. This place known as the “Abode of Clouds”, will hold your attention with its mountains veiled by mist, living bridges made from roots and falling water.
You will also visit Shillong, a nice city; Umngot River in Dawki having clear waters; Cherrapunji’s beauty that fills one with awe and wonder. The journey does not stop there however as it proceeds into the Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for rhinoceroses that have only one horn left in this world. Here, there are adventurous jeep rides where tourists may be able to see animals in their natural habitats. The last part of this vacation includes cultural activities around Guwahati involving visits to some temples and time reserved for buying souvenirs. This thoughtfully planned Meghalaya Tour Package intermixes wildlife viewing events with culture immersions and nature experiences thereby leaving one with a kaleidoscope of memories from North East India that can never be forgotten.
1. Cherrapunji: Sohra, as it is locally known, is said to be the wettest place on earth. These living roots bridges are a great wonder of bioengineering where rubber tree roots have been trained by Khasi people to grow into strong bridges over rivers. They become stronger and last for centuries. Nohkalikai Falls, with its 340 meter-drop, is an amazing sight especially during monsoons.
2. Dawki: The Umngot River in Dawki is famous for its clear white water. On a sunny day, the river seems invisible and boats appear to float in midair. The same river also marks the natural boundary between India and Bangladesh. The hills around and suspension bridge make it more picturesque.
3. Mawlynnong: This village values cleanliness and has developed community-based eco-tourism projects. The living root bridge here is single-decker (unlike some other such formations in this state) but easily accessible than others in this State. Besides, there is a bamboo sky view platform that enables you get unique view of surrounding plains of Bangladesh.
4. Shillong: Popular as “Scotland of the East” Shillong encompasses natural beauty mixed with colonial buildings structures. One can see all parts of town from Shillong Peak’s summit. It is also known as music capital as well as educational hub for north east India.
5. Mawsmai Cave: This limestone cave offers an adventurous experience with its narrow passages. The cave is well-lit, revealing intricate formations. It's relatively short but gives a good taste of caving for beginners.
6. Kaziranga National Park: Home to two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinoceros, Kaziranga is a conservation success story. The park's landscape includes tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense tropical broadleaf forests. Besides rhinos, it hosts significant populations of tigers, elephants, and various bird species.
7. Elephant Falls: Located near Shillong, this three-tiered waterfall is easily accessible. The falls are named after a rock resembling an elephant that once stood nearby but has since eroded away.
8. Don Bosco Museum: This modern museum in Shillong offers a comprehensive look at Northeast Indian cultures. Its seven floors cover everything from traditional attire and weapons to musical instruments and lifestyle exhibits of various tribes.
9. Laitlum Canyons: Offering dramatic views of deep gorges and rolling hills, Laitlum is off the usual tourist track. The name means "End of Hills" in the local Khasi language. It's a paradise for trekkers and nature lovers.
10. Mawphlang Sacred Grove: This ancient forest is preserved due to religious beliefs of the Khasi people. It's a biodiversity hotspot with numerous plant species, some with medicinal properties. The grove is central to many local myths and legends.
To explore both Meghalaya and Kaziranga, start by reaching Guwahati, Assam, which is well-connected by air, rail, and road. From Guwahati, travel to Shillong (Meghalaya) by taxi or bus, a journey of about 3-4 hours. Use Shillong as a base to explore Meghalaya's attractions. Then, proceed to Kaziranga National Park, approximately 6-7 hours from Shillong by road. After your Kaziranga visit, return to Guwahati (4-5 hours) for your departure. This route efficiently covers both destinations in one trip.
Winter (October to February): The ideal time to visit both destinations. Meghalaya offers pleasant temperatures and clear skies, perfect for sightseeing. Kaziranga provides the best wildlife viewing opportunities with comfortable weather. Waterfalls in Meghalaya have a steady flow, enhancing the scenic beauty.
Spring (March to April): A good period for both locations. Temperatures are warming but still comfortable. Rhododendrons bloom in Meghalaya, adding color to the landscapes. It's the last chance to visit Kaziranga before its monsoon closure, with receding water levels concentrating wildlife.
Summer/Monsoon (May to September): Challenging for combined trips. Meghalaya experiences heavy rainfall, especially from June to August. Kaziranga is typically closed due to monsoon flooding. Waterfalls in Meghalaya are at their fullest, but access can be difficult.
Autumn (Late September to Early October): A transition period with decreasing rainfall in Meghalaya. Kaziranga reopens, though dates vary yearly. Both destinations showcase lush green landscapes. Water levels in Kaziranga are still high, potentially limiting some areas.
