The town of Gokarna lies in the Kumta taluk district of Uttara Kannada, on the western coast of the country.It is spread over an area of approximately 10.9 sq km and has an elevation of more than 586 m above sea level. It is 483 km from Bengaluru and is situated in between the Gangavali and Agnashini rivers along the Karwar coast by the Arabian Sea.

Gokarna means cow’s ear in Sanskrit. According to one of the Hindu Epics, Lord Shiva emerged from the ear of a cow here, while others believe the reason for naming this place Gokarna is because it is at the confluence of two rivers Gangavati and Aghanashini and this looks like a cow's ear. One may visit this place to experience the holiness and learn more mythological stories about Gokarna . Houses a number of temples and hold a great importance in Hindu religion. Some of these are Mahabaleshwara Temple, Maha Ganapati Temple, Bhadrakali Temple and Shree Venkataramana Temple.

Over the past few years, Gokarna has become an important tourist destination owing to its alluring beaches that promise a peaceful vacation leaving behind the tourist chaotic destinations. These beaches also offer water based adventure activities like snorkelling, parasailing and boat rides.
