Where to go this summer for an easy family holiday

You may think that the words “easy” and “family holiday” cannot possibly go together. Think again—there’s a multitude of destinations out there that’ll appeal to all the family and eliminate the potential for arguing… until you arrive, of course. Here are just some of the ideal places to go if you’re looking for an easy family getaway.

Sardinia, Italy

It’s arguably one of Italy’s most underrated destinations, but for a tranquil, relaxed family holiday, Sardinia should be at the top of your list. It’s a picturesque, serene island off the country’s west coast, and never loses its charm despite being the second biggest island in the Mediterranean Sea.

Alghero, Cagliari and Sassari are the three biggest towns to explore here, but rest assured wherever you end up in Sardinia, you and the family will instantly fall in love with the island’s rustic charm. Just make sure you’re frequently venturing into the bustle, otherwise you run the risk of the little ones getting bored.

Algarve, Portugal

Although the Algarve has quickly developed into a bustling centre of travel and tourism, this part of Portugal has retained its original quiet charm in multiple locations—Monchique and Salema are two such lulled villages and towns.

However, depending on what you and your family are looking for, epicentres such as Albufeira could be more your scene—with a bustling town, a multitude of restaurants and energetic beaches to enjoy, the kids will certainly not be at a loss for things to do here. Best of all, it doesn’t take long to escape the noise, so if you’re wanting a quiet escape for a day then a small town is likely only a stone’s throw away.

California, United States

For many, California is seen as the expensive, superficial and crime-ridden state that should be avoided. However, many years have passed since its seedier period, the US’ most populated state now existing as a sun-soaked, diverse and extremely welcoming place for families to kick back and relax.

It doesn’t matter what you’re looking for from your getaway, either—from the countless beaches to the endless fun to be had in California, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Consider visiting the original Disneyland, as recommended by Thrillist—the Anaheim theme park was the first of its kind, and is arguably the best still to this day.

Barcelona, Spain

It might be a typical choice for some, but Barcelona packs a lot into its size. Here you’ll find a beautiful beach to soak up the sun as well as a city rich with culture, history and entertainment for all the family.

It’ll be hard for anyone to deny the grandeur and astonishment of the Sagrada Familia cathedral in the heart of Barcelona, under construction for over 150 years but finally nearing completion. Elsewhere, treat the kids to a splurge along the ramblas, where you’ll find a perfect harmony of small boutiques, chain stores and authentic (and delectable) dishes to pig out with—be sure to try a bit of jamon iberico, as recommended by 1Cover.

Dorset, England

If you’re really looking for a cheap, easy and accessible family holiday, you may not have to travel far from home. Dorset is one of the most naturally beautiful and diverse counties in England, boasting gorgeous beaches and picturesque settings alongside fun-filled cities and towns.

For a perfect all-rounder destination for the family, Weymouth is a safe bet—there’s a harmony of natural wonder and attractions here to appeal to everyone, from treasure trails to Sea Life. Elsewhere, Bournemouth boasts one of the county’s—and country’s—very best beaches and Durdle Door is a must-see for all of the family.
